How Does Acupuncture Work?

Most people know that acupuncture is a traditional Chinese form of treatment and that it involves the placement of needles in areas known to reduce pain and create better overall health.

It is believed that the body needs to have harmony and a similar balance between “yin” and “yang.” When there is an imbalance of the yin and yang forces, there is an imbalance which can inhibit the body’s ability to feel completely well. When nerves, muscles, and connective tissue are stimulated through the placement of needles in key areas of the body they can stimulate blood flow, trigger the body to create its’ own natural painkillers, and bring balance to the body.

Who Should Acupuncture or Chiropractic Treatments:

There’s a wide range of pain-induced maladies that can benefit from acupuncture, chiropractic or a combination of both treatments. The goal of each is to reduce pain. These include:

  • Back/neck pain
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Tennis elbow/knee pain
  • High/low blood pressure
  • Painful periods, morning sickness and aid in inducing labor
  • Dental/ facial pain
  • Muscle tightness, strains, and sprains
  • Gastric issues like peptic ulcers
  • Stroke

What to Expect from Your Acupuncture Treatment?

Many people have found great relief, thanks to acupuncture, but to those that have never had the procedure before, it may seem quite daunting.

During the treatment, your acupuncturist will insert very thin needles into the areas of your body that are known to alleviate pain.

The acupuncturist will usually examine:

  • The areas of your body that are causing pain
  • The skin tone of your face
  • The coating and color of your tongue
  • Your pulse

The initial exam will help the acupuncturist determine a treatment plan. In most cases, patients receive 1-2 treatments per week, but this depends on the severity of the pain.

The needles are placed in key areas, often not near the site of the pain, but at the “pain point” in the body.
